Used Car Checklist

With the cost of new cars continuing to rise every year, buying a previously-owned (or used) car can often provide a bit of relief. New cars lose much of their value as soon as they're driven off the lot; so many people today see previously owned cars as a smart financial alternative. And thanks to advances in car manufacturing, used cars are better than ever and provide a great value.

If you're in the market for a used car, here's a checklist to consider when shopping for your car:

  1. List your needs and wants, and prioritize your list. (example: air conditioning, satellite radio).
  2. Determine how much you can afford. Consider the cost of maintaining your car.
  3. Narrow your selection by makes and models and research them.
  4. Research different options for purchasing your car (i.e. dealers, sellers,). Don't forget to check out CUDLautoSMART.com for a selection of thousands of cars.
  5. Know the fair market value. Visit Kelley Blue Book.
  6. Obtain Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) and research the vehicle histories. Visit CarFax for online vehicle history reports.
  7. Always test drive the cars you are considering. If possible have a mechanic check the car.
  8. If you feel hesitant, don't feel obligated to buy the car.
