Silver State Schools Credit Union Announces 2008 College Scholarship Winners


Silver State Schools Credit Union (SSSCU) has announced its 2008 college scholarship winners. Each of these scholarships, (three named for long-time volunteers Arlene Parkinson, Bart Roche, and Leonard Petoske, and one a needs-based SSSCU scholarship), awards $2,000 annually, renewable for up to four years, and is awarded to seniors who demonstrate excellence in academics, athletics and community service. For 2008, SSSCU once again recognized the important of this investment in its membership and its community, and has added the William Moore Scholarship (named after esteemed director Bill Moore), and a second SSSCU needs-based scholarship.

Arlene Parkinson Scholarship to Ashley Artmann, Green Valley H.S. who will graduate first in her class of 528 seniors with a 4.8 GPA. She is president of GVHS championship debate team, a two-time qualifier at the National Forensics League (NFL) tournament and Academic All-American. She is also a National Merit Semifinalist and three year letterman on the varsity softball team. Ms. Artmann will attend Stanford University to pursue her studies in English and Communications.

Bart Roche Scholarship to Magda Nowinski, Clark H.S. who will rank first in her graduating class with a 4.7 GPA. She is a member of the Nevada All-State Academic Team (students who have maintained a 4.0GPA while participating in varsity athletics) hers being volleyball, bowling and diving. Ms. Nowinski demonstrates her community commitment by her involvement in "Project Sunshine," which are camps for children with life threatening illnesses and/or situations. Margo has been accepted at UNR, where she will study Political Science.

Leonard Petoske Scholarship to Kristi Bradford, Rancho H.S., who will graduate second in her class of 519 seniors with a weighted GPA of 4.782. Ms. Bradford is a Wendy's H.S. Heisman winner, and AP Scholar with Distinction. She has been awarded the Spirit of Girls State Award, placed 1st in the University of Nevada Liftoff with Mathematics Research competition, and is a member of numerous organizations, from the National Honor Society to the Debate team. She is three year MVP/Team Captain on the varsity Golf Team. She has been accepted to Harvard, and intends to study Astrophysics/Astronomy. Her goal is to become a NASA astronaut.

William Moore Scholarship to Anupa Gewali, Green Valley H.S., who will graduate first in her class of 584 seniors, with a weighted GPA of 4.7. Her achievements include Nevada Student Journalist of the Year, National Merit Scholarship finalist, Harvard Book Club award recipient 2006-07, GVHS's Rotary Student of the Month, and Nevada Power's Clark County School District Student of the month. Ms. Gewali also demonstrates a strong commitment to community, volunteering at a Henderson hospital and as Chief Publicity Officer with the 2007 American Cancer Foundation's Relay for Life. She is also a competitive figure skater and accomplished student of Indian classical dance. She has applied and been accepted to the University of Rochester where she intends to study Biology and Journalism.

SSSCU Scholarship to Meghan Strickley, Henderson, graduated early with honors from Foothill H.S. with a GPA of 4.54. While at Foothill Ms. Strickley pursued college prep courses, including AP classes, and participated in theater and Tech Theater for three years. She was also Vice President and Secretary of the schools Thespian Group and master technician in charge of lights and rigging for all the school plays. Ms. Strickley has been offered admission to UNLV, and intends to pursue Theatre Arts.

The second SSSCU Scholarship goes to JerryDean Smith, of Jean, Nevada. Mr. Smith will graduate from Liberty H.S. with a weighted GPA of 4.082. His academic honors include National Honors Society and A-B Honor Roll. He is also a varsity athlete on the football and wrestling teams, as well as participating in track and field. Mr. Smith intends to study Computer Science at UNR, and hopes to pursue a career in video game programming, design, or animation.
