Community Involvement
Silver State Schools Credit Union believes in serving our community. Some of our activities include:
- Annual college scholarships for high school students
- Annual scholarships for SSSCU members to pursue New Teacher Certification or Masters of Education degrees.
- Commitment to financial literacy through workshops and advancement of NEFE high school curriculum in private and public schools. In 2004 over a 1,000 students were taught how to develop their own personal spending and savings plan.
- Involvement with the educational community, by providing support to the CCSD, CCSN, UNLV Alumni Association, the College of Education at UNR and the University of Southern Nevada, to name a few.
- Credit union associations and numerous charitable organizations also benefit from our support, involving both members and employees on behalf of Rex Bell and H.P. Fitzgerald Elementary Schools (our adopted schools), Children’s Miracle Network, Clark County Reads, Nevada Child Seekers, Spread the Word, Learning for Life, Reading Rocks, ATTC and many others.
Silver State Schools Credit Union Honored for High School Financial Literacy Program Entry from Local Credit Union Now Advances to National Competition
When Senate Bill 317-which mandates financial literacy instruction for high school students throughout Nevada-became law July 1, 2009, Silver State Schools Credit Union (SSSCU) realized this was the perfect time to offer its services of financial education to the Clark County School District. In the year since, the Credit Union has reached and taught more than 4,100 high school students in the Las Vegas area.
For its efforts, SSSCU recently received accolades from a credit union industry recognition program. SSSCU earned a first-place award in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award program which recognizes credit unions for socially responsible community projects. SSSCU was honored in the more than $500-million asset category, and will now compete in the national level recognition program, to be decided in November.
Silver State Schools Credit Union's financial literacy program, developed by its Business Development team, is considered the only one of its type that satisfies all of the requirements of Senate Bill 317. Teachers may choose to have the Credit Union present the entire program or they may choose only those topics they would like covered to best fit the class curriculum.
The awards program is administered at the state level by the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues, and nationally by the Credit Union National Association. Entries were submitted to the Leagues and judged by a committee from the Arizona Credit Union League.
If you are a high school teacher who would like to receive more information about SSSCU's high school financial literacy program, contact Crystal Lyon, Business Development Manager, at (702) 697-8082.
Credit Union Sponsors Reading Rocks! Literacy Challenge Program for the 6th Consecutive Year.
For the 6th consecutive year, Silver State Schools Credit Union was one the major sponsors of the Reading Rocks! literacy challenge. Over 55,000 students in 100 Clark County schools participated in the program, which was developed and coordinated by CBS Radio.
Students, grades 3 through 8, are challenged to read six books from an approved reading list. For each book they receive a stamp on their "game piece" from their reading teacher, which, once completed, is submitted to CBS Radio for entry into the contest. Over 25,000 game pieces were received; and at a recent ceremony, 12 students (two from each grade level) were randomly picked from all entries to receive various prizes - including rolling backpacks and Borders and Target gift cards from the Credit Union.
