Exporting Data

Your transactions can be exported from this service and imported into the following Personal Financial Management (PFM) software packages:

  • Quicken for Windows: versions 2000 to 2004 (Quicken 2005 for Windows and higher versions do not support the importing of .QIF files)
  • Quicken for Mac: versions 2000 and higher

Netscape Users: How to Export Data

The following instructions are for exporting data that will be imported into Quicken.

  1. Select the Activity tab.
  2. From the Online Activity screen, select the account and date range that you would like to export.
  3. Use the "Export to" pull-down menu to export the data to Quicken. (Note: Money does not currently support importing Online Activity transactions.)
  4. When exporting begins, an "Unknown File Type" message will appear. The message will say, "You have started to download a file type text/x-qif. Click more information on how to extend Navigator's capabilities. (More Info) (Pick App) (Save File) (Cancel)."
  5. Click Save File. A Save File box appears: Click on the Save As field, clear the filename and enter your file name with a .QIF extension.
  6. Click Save File.
  7. Proceed to open Quicken and follow the respective instructions for importing files.

IMPORTANT! If you have exported a file that Quicken does not recognize, please see the instructions for One-time Modification to PC Settings. After you have made the modification, you will need to re-perform the steps above for exporting the data.

Internet Explorer Users: How to Export Data

The following instructions are for exporting data that will be imported into Quicken.

  1. Select the Activity tab.
  2. From the Online Activity screen, select the account and date range that you would like to export.
  3. Use the "Export to" pull-down menu to export the data to Quicken. (Note: Money does not currently support importing Online Activity transactions.)
  4. When exporting, a "File Download" message will appear. The message will say, "What would you like to do with this file?" You will have two options. Choose "Save this file to disk."
  5. Click OK.
  6. A Save As box will be displayed. Clear the existing filename (fortecgi) from the Filename field and type in your file name.
  7. In the Save as type field, select Quicken QIF Data File. (If the selection is not available, please see the instructions below for the one-time modification to PC settings.)
  8. Click Save to save the file.
  9. Proceed to open Quicken and follow the respective instructions for importing files.

One-time Modification to PC Settings

This one-time modification may be necessary for exporting data that will be imported into Quicken.

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon located on the desktop.
  2. On the View menu, click Folder Options or Options (the selection depends on the Windows operating system you are using) and then click the File Types tab.
  3. Scroll down the list of Registered File Types checking for Quicken QIF data file.
  4. If you do not find QIF in the list of registered file types, do the following:
    1. Click on New Type.
    2. Enter Quicken QIF data file in the "Description of type" field.
    3. Enter qif in the "Associate extension" field and in the "Default Extension for Content Type" field.
    4. Enter text/x-qif in the "Content_Type(MIME)" field.
    5. Click OK, and then click OK again.

How to Launch Quicken

You can configure your PC and Web browser to dynamically launch Quicken when you click Export Data. The procedures for this vary with different versions of operating systems, Web browsers, and Personal Financial Management (PFM) software. Consult the help features of your particular system and software in addition to these instructions.
