Silver State Schools Credit Union Awards CCSD “Five Star” School with $5,000

Silver State Schools Credit Union will present a $5,000 check to Cyril Wengert Elementary School on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 11a.m. Wengert Elementary is one of 36  schools identified as “Five Star” in the “School Performance Framework,” the Clark County School District's (CCSD) new transparent system for ranking schools.

CCSD’s School-Community Partnership Program worked with community partners to develop a program to recognize the top-performing schools. All four- and five star schools received recognition with banners, lunches and certificates.  The five star schools, which also earned a measure of autonomy within the school district, were eligible to receive the $5,000 donated by the Credit Union, with Wengert chosen randomly as the winner. “We understand the value that additional funds can contribute to our schools.”  Silver State Schools Credit Union CEO Andy Hunter stated. “Wengert Elementary may choose to spend the money in any way they see fit, whether it is to purchase iPads for the classroom, buses for field trips, or to send staff to professional development training.”

All of the Five Star schools will be honored at the May 17 event, and many of the core group of community partners, Bank of America, Capriotti’s, 8 News NOW, UNLV and SSSCU, will be there. Each school will not only receive display banners from Bank of America proclaiming their achievement, they will also receive celebration lunches, courtesy of Capriotti’s.

For those elementary schools that have been identified as ‘high-performing’ under this program, this accolade means each of the schools gains greater autonomy and control not only in budgeting, staffing and scheduling, but also in core areas such as instructional practices and selection of supplemental programs and materials.
