Saving For Retirement

70 million Americans will retire during the next 15 years, but many are completely unprepared, according to statistics from the 2003 Retirement Confidence Survey co-sponsored by the Employee Benefit Research Institute and the American Savings Education Council.

Consider their findings:
  • Three in ten workers have not saved for retirement.
  • 33% of workers are not confident about having enough money to retire in comfort.
  • Less than 4 in 10 workers have calculated how much money they will need to save for retirement.
The reality is that many people will spend two or three full decades in retirement. For those who are unprepared, the risk of outliving their retirement savings is real.

What can you do about it? If you've never contributed to an IRA before, this is the time to do it. You have until April 15th to contribute, but you can also contribute for next year now. Why would you want to do that? Because you'll begin earning interest on your investment immediately.

Sit down with your significant other and plan your retirement goals. How much money will you need to afford your chosen retirement lifestyle?

Estimate how long your current retirement savings can last. Contribute as much as you can to your 401(k) or other retirement plan because, no matter what your age, there's no reason to wait.
