HERE ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN HELP DEFEND YOURSELF AGAINST FRAUD

Password Security

  • Ensure that you do not use the same password for all sites that require logins.
  • Avoid using simple patterns or words such as “1234” or “password1.”
  • Do not use personal information as your password. For example: your name, date of birth, social security number, house address, etc…
  • Aim for some complexity in your passwords. Attempt to include lowercase, uppercase, symbols and numbers in your password. The rule of thumb should be at least eight to ten characters in length.
  • Attempt to add a second layer of authentication. Two-factor authentication methods rely on the user to provide a password, as well as a second factor, such as a One Time Password (OTP) sent to a security device (e.g. a security token or smartphone) or answering established questions.

Secure your Information

  • Do not provide access to your account to unauthorized individuals. Be cautious of scam participation.
  • Do not write down your PIN or store this information in your wallet/on your card.
  • Keep your contact information up to date.
  • Shred unneeded documents.
  • Protect your computer by using security software.
  • Do not use public computers or Wi-Fi to access online banking or sensitive information.

Be Observant

  • Review your statements and account activities often.
  • Monitor your credit reporting history.
  • Read informative emails from your financial institution.
  • Be on the lookout for any suspicious terminals. For example: overlay skimmers, appearance of tampering at an ATM, etc.
  • Immediately report fraud or suspicious activity.
